The friendship between the two girls is lovely, especially in such a hostile environment. And for all that, the movie still manages to be fun, to make you laugh (albeit often at someone's painful expenses).

This is a welcome sight. But while Girlhood was the story of a girl growing up in the ghetto told by someone who wasn't from that area, Benyamina is someone who came from those places and understands it intimately and as a result her film feels more vibrant and multi- dimensional. For English-speaking territories, the subtitles represent the greatest distribution challenge. Within minutes, any such concerns have been laid entirely to rest. There’s even a scene in “Divines” where Dounia and Maimouna mime an imagined escape from their quotidian existence in a Ferrari, offering a fantasy hunk a ride and drinking champagne behind the wheel.

Praise must of course go towards the main character, surprisingly multifaceted, rich and intense in about any moment of the film.

As such, it’s a testament to Benyamina’s arrival as a fully-formed voice that there aren’t more of these sort of minor freshman flourishes to get past.At an edition of the festival heavy on female-driven narratives, that has seen stars including Geena Davis and Susan Sarandon weigh in on the perennial chestnut of women in film, “Divines” doesn’t display the same level of practiced Hollywood sheen as, say, “Thelma and Louise”. 1 Year Follow Up. This is one very affecting movie, a type of film that fills you with a sense of real people feeling real emotions --nothing is fake, all the characters and all their needs are as real and painful as it gets. On top of that we get a high-strung dramatic musical score that sets in occasionally to remind us that this is serious stuff, oh and a kind of romance between the girl and a dancer that doesn't really add to the plot, but merely serves as an excuse for some fancy camera footage of dancers, so we can cut back and forth between violent scenes and scenes with dancers in motion. Kalvanda is likewise fearsomely hard-nosed as feared small-time local crook Rebecca.The girls’ first introduction to Rebecca makes use of an attractive white blond man with a toned torso, dressed only in underwear, occupying the same traditional symbolic space that conventionally attractive women often do in music videos. How the choices you make define your path is shown well!!! The quality of the work and the quality of the finished install is as good as you can expect but the company was very disorganised.
